Energy-Saving Home Features We Use at Gem Homes

 In Digital Marketing Blog

By incorporating thoughtful, innovative solutions into our designs, we help homeowners save on energy costs while enhancing comfort. Today, we’d like to share two energy-saving home features we regularly use to boost the efficiency of our homes.

Foam Spacers in Headers for Maximum Energy Efficiency

One of the simple yet effective ways we increase the energy efficiency of a home is by using foam spacers in the headers above windows and doors. Headers are the framing members that support the weight above openings, and while they’re typically rated at R-0 (meaning they don’t offer much insulation), we go the extra mile. By using foam spacers, we can increase the R-value of the header to nearly R-9, providing an incredible energy-saving advantage.

This relatively inexpensive and straightforward technique is an easy way to improve the insulation of a home. It’s just one example of how we incorporate energy-saving home features without compromising the integrity or cost-effectiveness of the build.

Flash Foam for Airtight Attics

Another strategy we use to improve energy efficiency is “flashing foam” in the attic. This involves applying closed-cell foam to the attic drywall before the installation of blown-in cellulose insulation. The result? A much tighter, more airtight attic that dramatically reduces the chance of air leakage.

By using this method, we can significantly increase the attic’s R-value without adding excessive cellulose, which over time can sag and lose its effectiveness. Flashing foam not only maintains the attic’s energy performance but also ensures the home remains comfortable year-round, regardless of the temperature outside.

A Simple, Cost-Effective Approach to Energy Efficiency 💡

Both of these techniques are easy to implement and cost-effective, yet they have a lasting impact on a home’s energy savings. At Gem Homes, we are dedicated to creating homes that provide lasting value—not just in terms of quality but also through efficiency.

By including energy-saving home features like foam spacers in headers and flashing foam in the attic, we’re able to deliver homes that are more sustainable and comfortable for our clients.
